How to Update Garmin eTrex — 8 Steps
Cable: USB-A to mini-USB (eTrex 10, 20, 22x, 30, 32x) or USB-A to USB-C (eTrex SE, Solar). Garmin Express: Required
- 1
Insert fresh AA batteries (or charge if SE/Solar)
eTrex 10/20/22x/30/32x use 2x AA batteries. Use NEW alkaline or fully-charged NiMH — old batteries cause mid-update reboots. eTrex SE/Solar charge via USB-C — full charge before update.
- 2
Connect eTrex to PC via USB cable
eTrex 10, 20, 22x, 30, 32x use mini-USB (older type). eTrex SE and Solar use USB-C. Use original Garmin cable. Plug into rear PC USB port for stable power.
- 3
Open Garmin Express, sign in with Garmin account
Express detects eTrex automatically. If your TOPO maps were purchased on a different Garmin account, sign in with THAT account or maps will show locked.
- 4
Back up custom waypoints BEFORE updating
eTrex waypoints sometimes vanish during firmware update. In Express → Tools → Backup Device. Saves all waypoints, tracks, routes to your PC. Restorable if anything goes wrong.
⚠️ Warning: Skipping this step is the #1 mistake we see.
- 5
Install firmware first, then maps
Firmware update: 30-80 MB, takes 5 minutes. After firmware reboot, install TOPO maps. eTrex base map is built-in; TOPO 24K or City Navigator are optional add-ons.
- 6
For TOPO maps via SD card, format card properly
If installing TOPO on a microSD: format card to FAT32 (NOT exFAT — eTrex doesn't read exFAT). Create /Garmin/ folder on card. Copy gmapsupp.img into that folder. Insert card into eTrex (battery cover, then SD slot).
- 7
Restore waypoints from backup if needed
After update, if waypoints missing: in Express → Tools → Restore from Backup → select pre-update backup. Waypoints reappear on next sync.
- 8
Recalibrate compass & altimeter (if eTrex 30/32x)
Settings → Heading → Calibrate Compass. Hold eTrex flat, perform figure-8 motion, then vertical figure-8. Settings → Altimeter → Calibrate → enter known elevation (or set to GPS). Premium eTrex models only.

Trigger
After 6+ months in storage
Symptom
eTrex won't acquire satellites — stuck on 'Acquiring'
Our Fix
Almanac severely outdated. Place outdoors with clear sky, leave on for 15-20 minutes for cold start. Don't move device. Almanac re-downloads from satellites.
Trigger
After firmware 6.x (eTrex 22x/32x)
Symptom
Compass declination calculation incorrect in high latitudes
Our Fix
Known regression. Workaround: manually set declination (Settings → Heading → Magnetic Declination). Use NOAA online calculator for your location.
Trigger
After microSD card swap
Symptom
TOPO map shows on PC but not on eTrex
Our Fix
Card format wrong (exFAT instead of FAT32) OR file not in /Garmin/ folder OR file not named gmapsupp.img. Reformat to FAT32, place file correctly, re-insert.
Trigger
After cold weather (below 20°F)
Symptom
Screen unresponsive, slow to draw map
Our Fix
LCD response slows below 20°F — normal physics. Workaround: keep eTrex inside jacket near body until ready to use, then expose for navigation only.
