How to Update Garmin GPSMAP — 8 Steps

Cable: USB-A to mini-USB (GPSMAP 64, 65, 66) or USB-A to USB-C (GPSMAP 67, 67i). Garmin Express: Required

    Insert fresh AA batteries OR connect via USB

    GPSMAP 64/65/66 use 2x AA. GPSMAP 67/67i has internal lithium (charge via USB). For long updates, connect via USB even with AA — keeps power stable.

    ⚠️ Warning: GPSMAP 67i with inReach: keep subscription active during updates — Iridium connection sometimes needed for activation files.

All same hardware platform, different bundled features: 66s = base model with TOPO US 100K. 66st = adds preloaded TOPO US 24K (saves $50). 66sr = adds multi-band GPS receiver for better accuracy in canyons/canopy. 66i = adds inReach satellite messaging + SOS (requires subscription). Solution: upgrade to GPSMAP 65 or 66 series with multi-constellation. GPSMAP 64 is still excellent in open sky, just weaker in canyons and tree cover.
How accurate is GPSMAP 66sr in the woods?▼
