What if these steps didn't work?
Here are the most common problems and how to fix them.
❓ My photo is too big — it says 'Attachment too large'
Gmail allows up to 25 MB per email. For larger files, Gmail will offer to send the photo via Google Drive — just click 'Yes' and the recipient gets a link to download.
❓ I don't see a paperclip icon
If you're using Gmail in 'basic HTML' mode (older browsers), click 'Standard view' at the top. Or update your browser to the latest version.
❓ The photo won't upload — it just spins
Your internet may be slow. Wait 1 minute, then try again. If still stuck, close the compose window (it saves as a draft), reopen, and try again.
❓ I want to send several photos
Click the paperclip icon, hold the Ctrl key (or Command key on a Mac), and click each photo one by one. They all attach together.
Common questions about how to attach a photo in gmail
How big a photo can I send in Gmail?+
Up to 25 MB total in one email. Most phone photos are 2-5 MB so you can usually send 5-10 in one email.
Can I send a photo from my phone to a Gmail account?+
Yes. On the Gmail app, tap Compose, tap the paperclip icon, choose 'Attach file', and pick photos from your gallery.
Will the recipient be able to see my photo?+
Yes — anyone with email can see attached photos. They just click the photo in the email to view or download.
Can the photo be too small to send?+
No — there's no minimum size. Even a tiny image works. The 25 MB limit is the maximum, not minimum.
Why does my photo show up sideways for the person who got it?+
Some phones save photo orientation in a way email doesn't read. Before sending, open the photo on your computer and rotate it to the correct orientation, then save and re-attach.
